Pioneer Chicken was a popular fried chicken chain founded in Los Angeles in 1961 by Rick Kaufman, who was inspired by his previous work at the Hollywood Ranch Market. The mascot, Pioneer Pete, a jolly cook, appeared on logos and in children’s comics. The company reached its peak in the 1980s with around 270 locations.
